Legacy modernisation without the big, risky switchover.

Many UK businesses run on a system someone built years ago: an Access database, an old PHP or .NET application, a server in a cupboard. It still works, mostly, but it is hard to change, harder to secure, and nobody wants to touch it. Modernisation moves it to supported technology in stages, keeping the data and the hard-won business rules inside it.

In short

What is legacy system modernisation?

Legacy system modernisation is moving ageing software, such as an old database, an unsupported framework or an on-premise server, to modern, supported technology while keeping its data and business rules. It can mean refactoring, rebuilding or replacing the system, and it is usually done in stages.

Old systems also stand between many firms and AI: 61 per cent of UK IT and risk leaders surveyed say old platforms are actively blocking AI adoption (Cloudhouse, December 2025). Overruns are common too: 77 per cent of large UK organisations have gone over budget on modernisation (Ensono, September 2026). Working in stages, each with its own fixed quote, means the cost of every step is known before it starts.

Deliverables

What we modernise.

01 Ageing applications Old PHP, .NET, Java and Classic ASP systems refactored or rebuilt on modern, supported frameworks, one part at a time.
02 Access databases and spreadsheets Business-critical Access databases and spreadsheet systems turned into proper web applications, with real permissions, backups and an audit trail.
03 On-premise to cloud Servers on your own premises moved to UK regions on AWS, Google Cloud or Azure, with the monthly running cost estimated before the move.
04 Integrations that last Your systems connected to Xero, Sage, QuickBooks, your CRM and your online shop through documented APIs, replacing fragile exports and retyping.
05 Making Tax Digital and e-invoicing Making Tax Digital for Income Tax has applied to income above £50,000 since April 2026 and extends to income above £30,000 from April 2027, and e-invoicing becomes mandatory for VAT invoices from April 2029 (HMRC). We link bespoke systems to HMRC-recognised software, so records flow digitally instead of being retyped.
06 Ready for AI Clean, connected data and modern APIs, so the AI tools and agents you want next have something reliable to work with.

Process

How a modernisation runs.

01
First
Assess what is there.
We map the system, its data, its integrations and the business rules buried in the code, and find out what actually breaks if it stops.
02
Then
Plan in stages.
A staged plan: what to keep, what to rebuild and in what order, each stage with its own fixed quote, so you can stop after any stage and still be better off.
03
Stage by stage
Move safely.
Each stage runs alongside the old system until the numbers match, then switches over at a quiet time with a tested way back.

Nothing lost in the move.

The real value in an old system is rarely the code. It is the data and the rules: the discount that only applies to trade customers on a Tuesday, the client who is invoiced differently. We write down every rule we find, test the new system against the old one with real data and keep the old one available until you are confident. You end up with modern software and, often for the first time, a written record of how your business actually works.

Pricing and questions

Frequently asked questions.

Should we rebuild it or switch to off-the-shelf software?

It depends on how much of your advantage lives in the system. If a standard package now does the job, we will say so and help you migrate to it. If your processes are what make you different, rebuilding them properly usually costs less over time than bending a generic tool.

Can you work on a system nobody understands any more?

Yes. That describes most of them. We read the code, the database and the logs, talk to the people who use it, and write down what it does before we change anything. Our Project Rescue service covers systems where access or ownership is also in doubt.

Will the business have to stop while you switch over?

No. We run the new system alongside the old one, compare the results and switch over in stages at quiet times, with a tested route back if anything looks wrong.

Can you get our systems ready for Making Tax Digital or e-invoicing?

Yes. Making Tax Digital for Income Tax needs digital records and HMRC-recognised software, and e-invoicing becomes mandatory for VAT invoices from April 2029. We connect bespoke and older systems to recognised accounting software so the data flows digitally. Your accountant stays your adviser on what you must file.

How is modernisation priced?

In stages, each with a fixed, itemised quote in pounds, after an assessment of the existing system. You can stop after any stage and keep what was delivered. Hosting and licence costs are estimated up front and shown separately.
