Retail and e-commerce

Nearly three in ten retail pounds in Britain are now spent online. The rules on selling there have just got tighter.

Hidden fees and fake reviews are banned, buy now pay later is regulated, subscription rules are coming, and EU sales need product safety information. We build shops and retail systems that sell well and stay on the right side of the rules.

The sector

Retail and e-commerce, in numbers.

Online sales now make up close to three in every ten pounds spent with British retailers, and the CMA can fine retailers directly when pricing misleads.

28.8%
of all retail sales in Great Britain were made online in August 2026 (ONS).
£4.2m
the CMA's first direct fine under the new consumer law, over a £3 booking fee left out of the headline price (CMA, April 2026).
What the rules ask of you

The rules shaping your software.

The regulations and standards that change what your systems, website and data handling need to do, each with its date and a link to the source.

01 Drip pricing and fake reviews banned since April 2025 Compulsory fees must be in the headline price, and fake or concealed incentivised reviews are banned. The CMA can fine up to 10 per cent of global turnover. Source
02 Buy now pay later regulated since July 2026 Deferred payment credit has been regulated by the FCA since 15 July 2026, so lenders need authorisation and BNPL promotions must be approved. Source
03 Subscription contracts expected January 2027 New rules on consumer subscriptions are expected from January 2027, covering renewal reminders, cooling-off periods and easy online cancellation. The detailed regulations are still pending. Source
04 EU General Product Safety Regulation since December 2024 Products sold to EU or Northern Ireland consumers need an EU responsible person and specified safety information in the listing. Source

Thirty minutes with a senior engineer, free and with no obligation. Bring the problem, not a brief.

What we will not claim.

No checkout is CMA approved, and we are not FCA authorised. You stay responsible for your prices, promotions and products. We build shops that show honest totals, use authorised payment providers and keep the records regulators expect.

Retail and e-commerce questions

Frequently asked questions.

What do we need to change for the drip pricing ban?

Any compulsory fee, such as a booking, service or admin charge, must be in the first price customers see. Optional extras can still be offered. We review your product pages, basket and checkout and move compulsory charges into the headline price.

Can we keep offering buy now pay later?

Yes, but since 15 July 2026 the lender must be authorised by the FCA or hold a temporary permission. Your BNPL banners and checkout wording count as financial promotions, so we use the wording your lender has approved.

When do the new subscription rules start?

They are expected from January 2027, but the detailed regulations are still pending, so the exact requirements may change. We build renewal reminders, cooling-off notices and simple online cancellation now, and adjust them when the final rules are published.

Can you help us sell into the EU?

Yes. We set up product safety information, responsible person details, landed costs including the EU's low-value parcel duty, and IOSS VAT handling, so EU customers see the right total and your listings carry the information the product safety rules require.
